Day 9 - Piraeus and Athens

Today, we docked in Piraeus, Greece, as usual at 7:00 a.m. When we got off the boat, several hours later, we caught a taxi to the train station where we took took the train to Athens. This is me in the train station.

This is Jen in the train station. She says I am not supposed to take any more pictures of her because she is wearing the same DKNY outfit. Apparently, there was a big sale on DKNY t-shirts before we left. DKNY, as you may know, was purchased by a large French company. Technically, therefore, I don't condone buying DKNY, but I am in favor of her buying things on sale!

Following up on our massive stair climbing exercise yesterday, here is Jen climbing up a very long flight of stairs at the train station while I ride the perfectly good escalator right next to it.

Here she comes at the top where you can see the escalator I rode. (I don't know what is wrong with her. It must be something in the air in Greece.)

Of course, the highlight of today was going up to the top of the Acropolis and seeing the old structures like the Parthenon. Suypposedly, they are trying to get it restored in time for the Olympics next year but they have a long way to go.

The statues in front are recreations. The originals were destroyed by pollution, only in the last 30 years or so.

This is the outdoor theatre that is still used:

It was very, very hot. Specifically, I think it was the dog days of summer because there were dogs like these lying around everywhere, practically comatose. Of course, Jen wanted to go talk to them, but I told her to let sleeping dogs lie.

We thought about eating here but decided not to.

Here is a view of the flea market for tourists. We stayed as long as we could in the heat and headed back to the ship.

On the way back, we stopped at this "Internet Cafe and Baggage Storage" across from the train station. Apparently, if you're backpacking across Europe, you can check your e-mail and leave your bag here while you go into the city.

This is me in the Greek Internet Cafe, pretending to check my e-mail.

That night, at dinner, Sheldon told the wait staff that it was Jen's birthday. When she came back from the bathroom, they all sang "Happy Birthday" to her.

They also gave her a cake. You can see the candle here as well as me pointing at Sheldon who caused all the ruckus!

Happy Birthday, Honey!
