Day 6 - July 3 - Naples drama - Pompeii - Sorrento & Capri

POMPEII

Here we are standing in front of Vesuvius, the volcano that exploded in 79 A.D., destroying and burying the city of Pompeii. It was discovered in the 1700's and most of the excavation work was done in the 1860's. In this unique city with both Greek and Roman influences, you can see and imagine what life was like 2000 years ago.

Here is one of the excavated bodies. In 1860, they invented a way of poring plaster into the holes left in the solid ash after the organic materials disappear.

Here is the main Forum. The 2-story structures were possible after the time of Julius Ceasar.

Here is our tour guide on the left, standing outside one of the tour highlights -- the brothel. Apparently, businessmen would come to town, and when they could not speak the local language, they could just point at the pictorial menu on the wall.

Here are some of the original preserved images from the menu of the world's oldest profession.

Here is "Saudia Arabia Jen" again. Throughout our sightseeing, seems to gravitate towards walking about four feet behind me, single file. If I try to slow down and walk beside her, she keeps slowing down too. If I stay walking beside her, we slow to a snail's pace. But when I start walking faster, she follows in behind and always maintains the pace (unless I'm sprinting to catch a boat or something).

Here is one of the first fast food restaurants where they would serve hot food.

Here is a two-way street. The horses and chariots would go over and between the rocks in the middle of the street. The rocks are stepping stones to go over the used water running out.

This statue is in the front entrance of the biggest house in town.

This is a water fountain in the public bath.
